Bass guitar has often been a passed over instrument. Most beginners opt to learn to play the guitar or the piano rather then the bass since these instruments are more popular with the front person and get the most attention.
Then there are the few of us that love the bass. We love the feel and groove the bass provides to a band and almost every song. We recognize just how important the bass is as an instrument and decide to take bass guitar lessons rather then guitar, piano or any other instrument.
Of course, that’s just the first challenge. What many beginner bass players don’t realize is that while there are literally hundreds of people waiting to teach you guitar there just aren’t as many bass guitar instructors around. This leaves many beginners wondering how they are going to learn to play.
One piece of good news is that there are many dvd courses beginners can opt to use such as Teach Me Bass Guitar, a DVD self study program by a world class bass player and instructor.
There is also a variety of online bass lessons you can opt to try, although personally I enjoy using DVDs on my TV and DVD player rather then sitting in front of my computer to learn.
The choice in the end of course is entirely up to you to decide if you want to go with online or dvd video lessons.
If you’re dead set on using a private instructor I’d suggest you consider goingt o a local music store and asking for a referral to someone who teaches bass to beginners. Also music conservatories often will have a bass teacher on staff. Be prepared to pay about $25 – $35 per lesson how ever if you decide to go this way.
